Welcome to our FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

AVAA - General

We recommend a minimum of 2 units to keep symmetry in a room.

The number of units is dependent on the number of locations that need to be treated more than the size of the room.

In practice, the first two units are placed where they are most useful to the listening position, so they will have the greatest impact. Adding other units in different places further reduces the room modes.

The AVAA C214 and AVAA C20 are very comparable in terms of performance.
The main difference lies in the design and size, which make the AVAA C214 easier to integrate into a room.
What’s more, the AVAA C214 can be individually controlled via a smartphone app to turn it on and off and to adjust the gain.
Gain can be reduced on both models if the device shows signs of instability in its environment (where it is positioned).
On the AVAA C214, it is also possible to increase the gain and make it more efficient.

My AVAA shows signs of instability/ringing.

The AVAA has been designed to absorb room modes in low frequencies.
It is composed, amongst others, of a loudspeaker and microphone which can be sensitive to feedback from the close environment (up to about 1.50 m around).
The feedback is audible and ranges from a slight ringing to a clear instability that is the stopped by the device’s internal limiter.

Setting the sensitivity/ of the AVAA:
In general the maximum possible absorption is desired in the low frequency by:
– Finding the location where the AVAA has the most effect in the listening position.
– Setting the highest possible gain without creating feedback from the direct environment.

Before reducing the gain, it is useful to spend a bit of time adjusting the acoustic interaction between the AVAA and its close environment:
– Move slightly the AVAA’s position and/or orientation.
– If possible, position some porous absorption between the AVAA and any reflective surfaces close to the AVAA.
– If necessary, reduce the sensitivity/gain slightly until the ringing disappears.

The AVAAs are pressure-based absorbers and will therefore be most effective in location where the pressure build-up is greatest. As it is almost impossible to model the acoustic behaviour in a room, the following rules offer a rapid way of find the best positions:

  • In the corners.
Corners will generally be most the most effective location as they combine pressure build-up from with lengthwise, width wise and vertical room modes.
  • Against the most rigid wall.
By definition, flexible walls will move and let sound through. Rigid walls will move less and have greater pressure build-up.
  • Closest to the source of sound.
If all corners are identical, we have generally observed greater efficiency in corners closest to the source of sound, such as behind the loudspeakers.

And of course, the best result in the listening position is easily achieved after a couple of trials with AVAAs in different positions.

Refer to the user manual for further details.

When the AVAAs are positioned in a high pressure area of a room mode, the room mode resonance time (RT60) is typically reduced by 30% to 50%.

The result is less low frequency ringing, clearer mids and highs with reduced masking effect and better imaging

AVAA C20

Yes PSI Audio products will work in all countries.

It is important however that the voltage is set to match the voltage of the mains (i.e.  230 V or 115 V). This is normally done by the importer who will make sure the products are set up for the local network.

The procedure is explained in our manual:
“Check that the voltage value on the AC power selector is set correctly (according to your local AC power supply). If this is not the case, it will be necessary to adjust the main power supply with the following procedure. Carefully squeeze the two latches on either side of the fuse plug and pull the fuse holder out of its socket. Now replace the fuse for the different voltage setting with the correct value fuse according to the required voltage. The correct value of the fuse is printed next to the OnOff switch of your loudspeaker. Pull out the grey plastic cap which holds the fuse and turn it 180° so it shows the correct voltage setting through the outer window when placed back in its position. Now you can carefully push the complete fuse holder back into its place above the mains connector”

Please check that the power switch is set on the ON position and that the mains cable is properly connected to the mains. If the problem persists, check the fuse, the voltage selector and the AC power voltage. If this doesn’t solve the problem, please contact PSI Audio or a PSI Audio authorised dealer.

AVAA C214 / App troubleshooting

This is a known bug that will be resolved in the next software update.
After resetting the credentials, connecting the C214 and switching it off, the connection is lost and the blue LED breathes as if trying to connect.
Simply reconnect the AVAA C214 to keep it connected, even after switching it off and on again.
In summary: after resetting the credentials, you may need to connect the AVAA C214 twice for it to stay connected even after powering down.

Class G/H

Classes G and H offer enhancements to the basic class AB design. Class G uses multiple power supply rails of various voltages, rapidly switching to a higher voltage when the audio signal wave has a peak value that is a higher voltage than the level of supply voltage, and switching back to a lower supply voltage when the peak value of the audio signal reduces. By switching the supply voltage to a higher level only when the largest output signals are present and then switching back to a lower level, average power consumption, and therefore heat caused by wasted power is reduced.
Class H improves on class G by continually varying the supply voltage at any time where the audio signal exceeds a particular threshold level. The power supply voltage tracks the peak level of the signal to be only slightly higher than the instantaneous value of the audio wave, returning to its lower level once the signal peak value falls below the threshold level again. Both classes G and H therefore require considerably more complex power supplies, which adds to the cost of implementing these features.

In a multi-way speaker system, the crossover filters as well as the transducers inevitably introduce phase distortion and consequently also variations of group delay.

The group delays are higher in low frequencies than in high frequencies. Theses create a separation in time between the low and high frequencies which typically gives multi-way speakers a “hollow” sound.

In a limited frequency range, an all-pass filter will allow to alter the phase without influencing the amplitude.

The CPR system is made up of several all-pass filters each acting in a specific range of frequency and together obtaining a Compensated Phase Response. This then provides a constant group delay that is kept to the bare minimum through our entirely analogue technology.

Thanks to the CPR system, the placement of sound in the actual sound space is perfectly accurate. Amongst others, this technology allows designing a surround sound systems with different types of PSI Audio speakers whilst maintaining a perfectly accurate phase response.
